Learning Solitude was a physical installation with a needy online presence. The object in the gallery either rejects attention or warmly welcomes visitors based on the number of likes it has received on its Instagram account. The posts on instagram are "selfies" — representations of the machine's memory of the physical space over time. Depending on the balance of visitors in the space vs online links and followers, it either posts text about loneliness or self-actualization. If the traffic to the online account is greater than the number of people in the gallery, the physical work will encourage people to go online and it will turn itself off in their presence.
